Computer Room & Digitalization
A big dream has come true: thanks to the generous support of the Rotary Club Thusis, our children received twelve brand-new computers! In our newly equipped computer room, they can now do their homework daily and use digital learning programs. The youngest are enthusiastically practicing touch typing and receiving basic computer lessons. To make the room not only technically functional but also inviting, we renovated it extensively: replaced some floor tiles, freshly painted the walls, and transformed it into a bright, friendly learning environment.
Special thanks go to the volunteer couple Felix and Pia from Domat-Ems. They not only set up the computers but also scanned and digitized our entire administrative documentation during their stay in Honduras - a huge step toward the future!
Easter Week
Once again, Easter vacation week was a highlight. Our children know in advance that Easter means a swimming pool, lots of games, and refreshing water fun. Every day was filled with laughter, splashing, and joy. It was a celebration of lightness and happiness.
Babyshower for Cindy
A special moment was the baby shower for Cindy, our beloved caregiver who has accompanied our children with patience, warmth, and dedication for five years. To show our appreciation, we organized a cheerful party with fun games for all ages, heartfelt gifts, and a lovingly prepared buffet. The children helped with preparations and were excited to surprise Cindy with little gestures that made her smile. This celebration honored Cindy’s loyal work and welcomed the new life that already fills us with joy.
Marixa turns 15
A unique day in a girl’s life in Latin America is the Quinceañera celebration. This year, Marixa celebrated her 15th birthday. Although she is rather shy, she was the center of attention that day: there were games, dancing, and even a waltz with her brother Ángel. A moment Marixa and all of us will never forget.
Welcome Ana – Our New Director
To strengthen the team and expand our foundation’s work, we are delighted to welcome Ana as the new director of the children’s home.
Ana is 38 years old and brings impressive qualifications: she is a professor of education specializing in counseling, holds a diploma in university didactics, and a master’s degree in human resource management. This combination of pedagogical expertise and organizational strength is exactly what we need for the further development of our project!
In her first days, Ana has already won the hearts of the children with her open and warm personality. She listens, motivates, and builds trust - both with the youngest and the teenagers. At the same time, she sets clear structures and introduces new ideas that enrich our daily life. Her passion for education, leadership experience, and commitment to children make her a true asset to our team. We look forward to the future and the opportunities Ana will bring.
Santa Rosa de Copán
Training & Opportunities
This quarter, we once again supported many people on their path to education and professional prospects. A total of 156 participants attended our various courses, including sewing, hairdressing, locksmithing, carpentry, automotive electronics, jewelry making, and scented candle production.
Each course teaches practical skills that enable participants to support their families or even start their own small business. For example, six of the 14 participants in the locksmithing course have already secured permanent jobs as locksmiths. Five are taking the step into self-employment by opening their own workshops. Two use the course as an additional source of income alongside their current occupation, and one participant is financing his studies with the skills learned.
These successes show how important it is to provide training opportunities for people of all ages. Education changes lives and we experience that every day in Santa Rosa de Copán.
Life in Unión y Esperanza (100 Houses Project)
Community and Responsibility
In our village Unión y Esperanza, all families have a five-year probation period before becoming homeowners. The only condition is to follow the rules and maintain respectful coexistence. To ensure everyone understands, our lawyer Gustavo and social worker Fabricia read the regulations to families in groups and discussed them together, clarifying questions and avoiding misunderstandings.
Currently, 96 families counting a total of 437 people, including 266 children, live in Unión y Esperanza. For community life to work, every family must contribute. That’s why each housing block organizes a cleanup day on Saturdays, where everyone sweeps, tidies, and cleans together. This keeps our village clean and livable.
Another important point is prevention. In recent months, the men carried out a “Ronda”, regular clearing of bushes and grass around the village to prevent wildfires from spreading. Initially, this duty was met with reluctance, but when one of these rounds helped detect and stop a fire before it reached Unión y Esperanza, everyone realized its value. Gratitude was great and so was the awareness that safety only works together.
Village Festival
Community life is not only about rules and duties but also about joy and togetherness. That’s why we organized a big village festival with a clothing sale, raffles, a delicious lunch for everyone, and donuts. The grand finale was a colorful piñata for the children. It was a day full of joy, encounters, and solidarity. A beautiful sign that Unión y Esperanza is more than just a roof over one’s head; it’s a real home.
School El Alpinista – Education as a Foundation for the Future
The school El Alpinista currently offers 290 students the opportunity to receive a solid education, opening real prospects for children in the region. The state generously supports us by providing ten teachers and a principal. As a foundation, we additionally fund an English and a computer science teacher because we consider these subjects essential. Our goal is for all children to acquire both English skills and digital competencies, abilities that will open crucial doors in their future careers.
A special gift was the creative support from Communicaziun.ch, who designed a beautiful logo for the school. It now adorns the entrance wall and all official school documents.
School Activities
In the first half of the year, numerous internal activities took place to promote togetherness and actively involve children in school life:
- Each class elected a class president, and a school president was chosen at the end.
- We celebrated Mother’s Day and Environment Day with projects and activities.
- Parent meetings were held outdoors.
- A special highlight was the recognition of our school El Alpinista as the best school in the region at an Educational Open Council of the Quimistán department.
- Additionally, our school was nominated as Instituto Modelo de la Zona. This honor fills us with pride and shows that our work is bearing fruit.
Construction of Clinic and Community Center
In May, we began building the clinic and the community center.
Clinic
Honduras’ healthcare system is very weak, leaving many families with little access to medical care. The clinic planned as part of the “100 Houses” project will provide basic medical care directly on-site, avoiding long, arduous trips to distant clinics. The goal is to detect diseases early, prevent severe cases, and thus improve health while reducing financial burdens. State-provided staff will ensure reliable medical care. A psychological service will complement the offer and strengthen the community in the long term .
Community Center
The “Unión y Esperanza” project aims to create a strong community where residents actively participate and use their skills meaningfully. The goal is to build social networks and friendships to prevent isolation and create a supportive environment. Strong cohesion fosters solidarity and gives people hope and courage.
The planned community center will be the heart of the village, a place where community is lived, responsibility shared, and togetherness promoted. It will offer a multifunctional room for celebrations and faith groups, as well as a functional kitchen for shared events. This center will not only be practical but will also enrich social life.
