It is a privilege to save childrens’ lives
For many children there is no space in the Honduran society because the state often ignores the sad fates the children face on a daily base. This was also the case with the two sisters Daysi and Yossely, which are since end of April at “yo quiero ser…” (Newsletter May).
Today, one year ago, Deysis‘ life has been change forever thanks to a heart surgery by American surgeons. During the last four months, she has gone through many progresses and is now able to crawl, to do acrobatic tricks alike a split and she even eats porridge. The most magnificent thing is though, that she can LAUGH, she laughs full heartedly. At the beginning, her inner light seemed to have been switched off and we were able to witness how she found to a most likely unprecedented inner glow.
Also her older sister, the 4 year old Yossely, came with an empty heart to us, barely spoke and was mainly grave. We thought she might suffer from hearing problems but all medical test have proven us wrong. Indeed, after some time at “yo quiero ser…” she started to warm up to her environment, she began to communicate, looked for company by the other children and discovered playing. Nowadays she sings and bubbles all day long alike a happy parrot.
When you have the chance to witness such live changes, then you start to realize how privileged you are to be able to save childrens‘ lives.

‘Matura assignment’
Jvana Netzer and Martina Bläsi, from the Canton of Grisons, chose for their ‘matura assignment’ following topic “development for an advertisement concept for a charity hike”. About 400 hours of intensive work, including the hike, they have invested in their paper. As their goal, they defined a donation amount of CHF 2’000.- and took off for their musical journey from Disentis via Arosa to Lenzerheide and then from St. Moritz to Davos. After only a few days they have reached already their targeted goal and ended up with a total of CHF 9’200.-.
Now the oral presentation of the project will be held in November. We are convinced that their commitment and the related revenue will guarantee them a great final grade by the panel of judges.
In the name of all our children a huge thank-you for the tireless devotion and the admirable commitment, their summer holidays were dedicated to the "yo quiero ser ..."!

Dia del Niño
Alike every year, the 10th of September is marked red in our calendar, because that day is dedicated to all the children. In Honduras, „Dia del Niño“, is very important and therefore celebrated in the elementary- as well as in the high school. The teachers put together a special program with many gifts, piñatas and cake for everybody.
On this occasion, different groups came to visit us to shared gifts, piñatas and many other surprises. While our children were able to unwrap gifts with great joy, this day meant for hundreds of thousands of Honduran children another day of struggle for survival. More than 500’000 children in Honduras are exploited on a daily basis. Be this through child labour, such as assisting with garbage disposal, in agriculture, transport, or begging at light signals to make ends meet.

English scholarship for Fernando
Thanks to his exceptional high school grade, our 17-year-old Fernando has received a scholarship from the ACCESS program, which is funded by the American Embassy and allows teenagers to learn proper English.
The ACCESS program transforms life through study by offering English as a second language to young people who lack the financial resources for further education. As a result, hurdles are being reduced and the realization of occupational and social dreams is less and less hindered.
Fernando is given 2 hours of English lessons every afternoon for the next 2 years. He is highly motivated and sings already English songs and he is very excited, because a student exchange in San Diego (USA) is on the program.
