Floods
In Honduras, June is the beginning of winter and also the beginning of the rainy season. This year we noticed this fact very quickly, as it rained heavily on the first few days already. As the sewer pipes are usually congested with garbage, it takes only a few minutes to flood the entire city of San Pedro Sula. The part of the city where we live, too, has been flooded several times. Fortunately, our property lies on a higher level than the streets, which means that we have been spared so far. One day, however, the water intruded into our classroom. All the children had to react quickly and grab a broom, and thus we got rid of the water very quickly.

Recently received children
Our most recent home residents, Luis and Geovanni, are feeling very well and they both were lucky to be able to abandon their survival strategies on the streets and live a “normal” childhood without having to bear the responsibility of adults. Geovanni is currently in the integration class and he is a very hardworking student. However, as he is lacking fundamental knowledge (colors, numbers, directions, shapes, etc.), he receives private lessons in the afternoon so as to be on the same level as his classmates.

Visit from Pizza Hut
We were given a special day from the staff of Pizza Hut. On a private basis they organized different activities such as clowns, piñatas, games, dances, etc. Pizza, of course, formed a big part of it, too.

Dia de Convivencia
On one Sunday, we realized the “Dia de Convivencia”. The boys had soccer practice and a tournament before midday and the girls danced Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. At midday, everyone ate lunch together outside and in the afternoon, we watched a family movie on the big screen.

Yulissa’s 15th anniversary
In Honduras, the 15th anniversary of a girl is a very special traditional day, as the transition from girl to woman is celebrated. Yulissa being an orphan child, we are her only family and we gave her this celebration. She chose a beautiful dress, got her hair dressed and her face made up by the coiffeur and thus was transformed into a wonderful princess. Dinner took place in Pizza Hut and the staff sang Happy Birthday. She beamed with joy the whole evening and enjoyed being the center of attention for one evening.

Santa Rosa de Copan
At the end of June, the children were on a one week vacation and we all went to Santa Rosa de Copan. As always we spent a wonderful and relaxing week. The children swam in the swimming pool, we took walks in the woods and the elder boys made wooden chairs with Francisco. One afternoon, two religion teachers organized a spiritual retreat where the children heard stories about different biblical subjects and thus they got a chance to manifest their relation with God. Our friend Tatjana, a dentist, visited us one morning and the children got fluoridation and dental checkups. The children with decayed teeth went to the dental clinic the next day in order to extract them.
