Special guests
Annigna Hofmann und Giorgio Dashi came to visit us for one week. Annigna has already done an internship at our home in 2012, that’s why she fell right back into our daily routine and was a great help. Both of them enjoyed the time with the children to a full extend and
kept them busy with fun new games. The farewell party took place at our beloved pizza place where we were all invited. It is always a highlight, small and big couldn’t hide their excitement.

Celebrations & gifts
Already before Christmas did we have many visitors from companies, churches and school classes. All of them spoiled our children with activities specially organized for us, games and presents. Each visitor was filled with joy when they had the possibility to share things with our children and saw their sparkly eyes and honest smiles. It is truly a priceless experience. For our older girls did two friends from “yo quiero ser” organize a gala evening. The girls made their hair, painted the nails and…

Once upon a time there was a little angel, he had countless small stars on his garment. Some days did those stars sparkle like a billion diamonds, those were the days when the angel was happy. There were other days where not a single star can be seen on his garment. Those were the days when the angel was very sad.
“Why are you so sad?” asked him his companions. “Sparkling on a dark sky is pure pleasure, isn’t it?!”.” The little angel shook his head. “I am not happy if I look down on earth!” he said. There is so much poverty and misery.” How can this make me happy?” “The misery on earth makes you sad?” asked one of the angels. “The earth is far away. Our job is to sparkle!” “Light shall bring hope” mumbled the little angel.

He looked again down on earth, and glanced over the part which was faced with the most misery. He saw a man and a woman. They were very poor and the woman was pregnant. Very tired they were walking along the street, but nobody welcomed them in. At each door the…

The merry dentists
On a casual November Sunday did three dentist visit us with a proper mission; why do we need to brush our teeth on a regular basis and how do we do it best way? It was an easy task, on one hand because our three ladies brought along fun tools and pictures and on the other hand were the kids curious and aware of the importance mouth hygiene has.
After the educational part did every child go through a check-up and received the necessary treatment. After six long hours was it time for the souvenir photo and plenty bright smiles
were facing the camera.

The birthday-month
At the end of each month do we organize a small birthday party for all the children who have their birthdays during this month. The month of November counts eight birthday-kids with whom we enjoyed some delicious pizza at a nearby pizzeria, including a mouthwatering birthday cake and last but not least our infamous Piñata. For the five Antúnez-siblings was it the very first time in their young ages…

Talent show
The elementary school Laura Vicuña organized with the support of USAID a talent show. Seven of our children competed in the qualification round and knew to impressed the jury with their own theatre piece. During the final they had to perform on a proper stage, alongside many groups from different schools. Some groups sang, others danced, even street dance but the highlight was doubtlessly a national singer who’s an idol for many kids.
The icing on the cake were the medals and diplomas which were handed out to all participants. Kids love trophies and it showed the respect everybody felt for their creativity and fearless hearts.

The night of culture
The annually night of culture is organized by the Aurora Billingue School and became a favorite for our artsy children. Yulissa and Fernando played guitar and performed a dance.
Also our smallest students, Juan Carlos and Luis, came up with a performance. They dressed up as an Hawaiian and a prince and won over all hearts. It was…

Peace Walk
Honduras belongs to the most dangerous countries around the globe, thereafter do we gratefully participate on peace walks to shout out our will after a safer world for all.
The walk took us about half an hour, afterwards did we enjoy some performances, on the main square right in front of the cathedral, which were all based around worldwide peace.

September: month of celebrations
10th of September is the broadly celebrated “dia del niño”, which means the children’s day. At school, religion class at home, basically everywhere has been celebrated the children’s day. We were lucky enough to welcome many different groups in our home
which wanted to celebrate with us, they brought along cakes, piñatas, games and many presents. The main attraction was a clown, he created objects with colorful balloons and smiley children faces were guaranteed.

Olympc Games organized by CEPUDO

Scuntrada 2014
Every year takes the “Scuntrada” in Oberhalbstein place and „yo quiero ser...“ was once again represented with a market stand. The main attraction was the self-made wood oven bread as well as the Honduran jewelry and sandals.
The support of the Sursetter community was immense and we highly appreciate it.

Clash
Even though our children mostly have a guardian angel on their side, an incident happened between Mayte and Geovanni while playing on the schoolground during a brake. They ran into each other and both got away with a laceration which had to be treated by our home doctor. Luckily were both of them all smiles by the end of the day.

Laguna
Honduras is known for its greenery and lush countryside just outside of big cities. One green lung close to San Pedro Sula is the Laguna in Ticamaya. On a calm Sunday did we prepare for a picknick and drove to the Laguna where we ate together and enjoyed the freedom. Some kids even brought along their schoolbooks and climbed up to…

New children
With great joy did we welcome 3 new siblings, Yaxel (5 years), Hostin (4 years) and Elvin (3 years), at our home. They showed obvious evidence of malnutrition and we all knew, that we can be a positive turning point in their young lives. They do not only lack between 6 to 8 kg bodyweight each, we also know that they had to go through a terrible past with both parents in prison. Before they came to us, they lived with their grandmother who was only able to serve them food from dumpsters.
Luckily enough, they felt home real fast and it shows that they feel comfortable in their new environment. We were even able to subscribe Yaxel right away at preschool, he is a smart little boy.

IHNFA closing down
The incumbent president of the IHNFA (Instituto Hondureño de la Niñez y la Familia) had to put an end to this highly uneconomical institution. For the coming six months is an interim arrangement in place until the DINAF (Dirección de la Niñez, Adolescencia y Familia) takes over…

American friends
For the fifth time did our American friends, from the Gran Comission church in Lake City, visit us. This year came Mike and two of his friends a bit early to help us build a house for an utterly poo family in Puerto Cortes. Our older boys accompanied the men and helped them with the construction work. Our American friends were highly impressed by our boys quality of work and their determination to help people in need.
After the house was built the students arrived. 15 teenagers spent some times with our children, they drew together some art pieces, played a lot, taught them new things and invited them on top of that to their hotel to spend a final day together at the poo. It was touching to see how the children connect easily with people and it was interesting to observe how each of them felt drawn to certain types of people.

Beauty saloon at the home
On Sunday came a hairdresser to visit us and brought her apprentices with her. They were clearly on a mission, they…

Birthday party
Jaklin, is a little boy who lived with us since 2012 until some relative came by one day and picked him up. Luckily enough is he in good hands and seems to be very happy. He feels well integrated in his new family and made some remarkable steps in his development. He speaks fluent as well as English because his family is originally from Roatan where both languages are practiced.
In May was his birthday and the family invited all children from Sala Cuna to celebrate his birthday. They all played together, sang, danced and ate cake.
Our dear friend Chiara Gonzales Ammann celebrated also her 3rd birthday. We organized a party and the kids were utterly excited when they saw the 10kg heavy Piñata.

Mother’s day
Alike every year did the children celebrate mother’s day at the school. The different classes prepared something special, either a dance, theater, sketch etc. and each child made a small gift to bring home.
At mother’s day many family members came to visit the children…

In this newsletter I want to tell you a true story that Milton Osorio has experienced.

Milton had been with us since November 2007 together with his sisters Reyna, Mabel and Jennifer. We don’t know anything about his family and the siblings have never been visited by family members in recent years.
Towards the end of last year, Milton went through a difficult phase. He thought he was invincible and better than anyone else, he didn’t help with anything and his social behaviour was disastrous. He didn’t do anything at school, didn’t obey his teacher and in the children’s home he experienced daily quarrels with the educators. This led him to the decision to take charge of his own life and leave the children’s home „yo quiero ser...“

This is how the 15-year-old told his story:” I didn’t know where to go… I kept walking through the city for hours without having a place to go. It was very late already and I still didn’t have a place to sleep. I kept walking but didn’t get far and…

First day of school
Since the end of October 2013, the children had more than 3 months of school holidays. In early February, we bought school uniforms and notebooks for everyone, which, of course, is always very time-consuming; every child needs two daily uniforms and a sports uniform for organizational reasons. We also have to buy all the notebooks and books ourselves and label them with the name of the student.
On February 10, the new school year finally began. Everyone was looking forward to it and on that day, nobody found it hard to get up at 5.00 a.m.
This year we have 37 students; 2 in kindergarten, 4 in introduction class, 5 in the first year, 1 in the second year, 3 in the third year, 1 in the fourth year, 8 in the fifth year, 9 in the sixth year, 2 in the first year of high school, 1 in the second year of high school and 1 in the third year of high school.
As we think education is very important, the children have to do their homework or additional special tasks in separate…
